After a brief struggle almost leaves Gerry infected, the Lanes reach the roof and are taken by helicopter to the UN Command Ship, the USS Argus. Here a team of analysts and military personnel are assessing the scope of the pandemic. A virologist, Dr. Andrew Fassbach, argues that the plague is a virus, whose origin must be found in order for a vaccine to be developed. Because of his expertise, Gerry is asked to help Fassbach find the outbreak’s source. Gerry initially refuses, but after the Navy threatens to kick his family off the ship if he doesn’t help, Gerry reluctantly agrees to accompany Fassbach and a team of US Navy SEALs as they fly to Camp Humphreys, a military base in South Korea where the word “zombie” was reportedly first used in reference to the outbreak. Before he leaves Gerry says goodbye to his family and gives his wife a satellite phone so they can keep in contact.
